Brass padlocks are being used a lot in everyday life. The material itself offers a good level of corrosion resistance which can be further improved by coating the lock or by adding plastic covers. Review: The better alternative for a padlock that offers decent security when compared to ones you get at your big box stores. - The ABUS 75IB/50 is a great lock for people looking for corrosion resistance, high security, and a high-quality lock. There are other alternatives that you can get your big box stores, but most are not as good as this lock that is designed in Germany. Master Lock are most common locks that currently you can get in North America, but in general their consumer-grade locks are of poor quality in terms of security. ABUS locks are quite expensive and difficult to find in Canada, but, I believe the better tolerances and added security pins are worth the extra cost in securing your valuables. The lock features in 8 millimeter shackle that is made out of hardened steel with a stainless steel coating. Because of this, it should enhance its resistance to cutting, especially when compared to a 5-6mm shackle. In addition, it uses ball bearings to secure both sides of the shackle. The stainless steel ball bearings prevent the lock from being shimmed and prevents the lock from being pried open (brute-forced). The ABUS IB series of locks are unlike most padlocks in which they use a non-traditional keyway and key. The use of a dimple cylinder and combined with mushroom pins, increases the difficulty of picking or covertly opening the lock. While it is not impossible to pick the lock, at the very least it adds additional time and effort in doing so. In comparison, a 4 or 5 pin Master Lock can be raked in seconds or picked open in under 2 mins. However, the use of a dimple key, makes duplication difficult, first you have to find a dealer or locksmith which can duplicate dimple keys. The 50mm version as sold on desertcart, will fit the standard hasps (angled) that are on the majority of lockers, these are typically found in schools, gyms, or at work. I have found that the 8mm diameter shackle with a 50mm inside shackle width is the maximum for these hasps, any bigger and the lock will not be able to either the hasp recessed portion of the locker handle.

You can google for images of the type of key this lock uses, it is different from regular keys - this means thieves in US are likely unfamiliar with it and won't know how to pick it. this is also a dual ball bearing lock for resistance to shimming. it is also key retaining which i like. the one "weakness" of this lock is the shackle is stainless steel, not boron steel - in other words the shackle is designed more for weather resistance than cutting resistance. that said, for use with a gym locker the shackle is probably stronger than locker itself, so even if you get a boron shackle lock a person with bolt cutters would probably be able to cut the locker itself. anyway, this is just about a perfect padlock for use with pool lockers if you don't mind swimming with the key ( i don't ). for a gym locker you could consider an ABUS titalium which is lighter due to aluminum body, but is not marine grade. i have recently upgraded to ABLOY 330 which is 5 times the price of this lock and realistically, as i said, breaking the locker would still be just as easy. that said, the ABLOY 330 does feature a boron shackle, super massive body and 100% unpickable mechanism, and still fits my locker. i now use both locks because all my gear doesn't fit in one locker. now if you're using a padlock for application where the shackle doesn't need to fit into a small hole ( such as gym lockers ) then i would get a lock with a thicker shackle. all 8 mm shackles can be cut with bolt cutters, even the boron ones ( although it takes some muscle ). unfortunately gym and pool lockers won't accept shackles much larger than 8 mm. they probably do this so they can cut the locks off if somebody leaves the locks on overnight.

A: No - key retaining. Very good lock.

A: Yes it is salt water resistant. It will last much longer than other padlocks but will still need to be replaced eventually due to the harsh conditions.

**Q: are the dimpled key locks any more secure than the saw tooth kind? Any Facts?**
A: As someone who engages in locksport, dimple locks have some advantages over the pin tumbler or "saw tooth" design. Biggest is ease of picking. Almost all locks can be picked with the right skills and tools. Pin tumbler locks can be picked with a lot of tools, wereas dimole locks need a more specialized tool set that can't be easily improvised.

The ABUS 75IB/50 is a great lock for people looking for corrosion resistance, high security, and a high-quality lock. There are other alternatives that you can get your big box stores, but most are not as good as this lock that is designed in Germany. Master Lock are most common locks that currently you can get in North America, but in general their consumer-grade locks are of poor quality in terms of security.
