Pushing the top of the button starts it and you just have to know to push the bottom of the button to stop it. Doesn't usually pull the lid off on removal of the device, but takes no effort to remove the lid.The only downside I feel is that the batteries needed replacement after 3 months of basically using it once a day. After 2 1/2 months the device seemed to be straining to work but still functioned.
