I have the 3.5 inch spinning drive bays filled with 10TB WD Red drives, the NVME drives are 500GB WD Red SN700, and the SATA bays contain 500GB WD Red SA500 drives. The sequence of installing drives matters, because you want the system files and applications to install onto the two SATA drives. So, install only the two SATA drives mirrored for initial configuration. I chose to install ZFS, for the extra stability. After the system boots up and initialized the SATA drives, you can shut down and install the 3.5 hard drives. Create your storage pool (I chose raid Z2, which allows two drives to fail without any data loss). Once the pool is online, then you can install the NVME SSDs and enable Read Cache and ZIL synchronous I/O Write log. For my uses, this provides good performance and reliability. The Virtualization Station works great for spinning up VMs. I have one Debian VM for PiHole, which auto starts when the NAS starts. The Container Station works good for Docker containers. I was confused that you have to go to the Applications tab in order to paste in your template.yaml to create the container. One thing that I wish were included is a graphics card. The AMD CPU does not include any graphics capability, so everything is controlled via the network. As a result, Plex transcoding is slow. Overall, I am happy with this NAS. The only thing missing for me is the lack of graphics capability. If I were doing it over, I probably would have built my own using an old Fractal case with lots of 3.5 inch drive bays and an HBA to connect them, and M.2 NVME drives for system and cache. Proxmox would be the bare metal hypervisor, and TrueNas installed as a VM with the HBA and hard drive passthru. If all you want to do is store and serve files, and text based VMs, this is an good choice if you can find it as a good price. My setup is fully stocked costing a bit more than I expected. I used serverpartsdeals to get 5 18tb ultrastar refurbs on desertcart for 1400$ I then purchased 2x U.2 Dell emc high durability NAND pcie gen3x4 ssds' and a pair of Micron 5300's all 4 of which have high durability for enterprise level work. The Mircon sata ssds' were brand new and strangely the only new drives in the entire setup. The device was updated and connected to my 10gig unifi aggregation switch. The unit was able to onboard 48tb of data in under 24 hours, quite the feat. Write and read speeds were heavily improved adding dual 1.6tb u.2's in as flash cache raid, and setup was a breeze, though I couldn't really tweak much in the way of zil cache modes and raid settings for these 2 ssd's, and there's an option requiring more than 2 nvme ssds's to provide what they seem to call the "best" flash to cache option, which I believe would require converting these 2 u.2's into 4x nvme m.2's via adapters. I'm confident the refurbs I got will be solid, and u.2 provides power fail protection natively so I'm in for a penny on it.
