It supports streaming video to an HDTV, VoIP phone, and a couple other devices. Although these don't all need the gigabit connection, it's there if I want to plug in my laptop for much speedier inside-network transfers compared to wireless. The gigabit feature is also good future-protection since this speed will only become more common. Another highly desirable feature is that the activity and connection-speed LEDs are right there, physically adjacent to the Ethernet connectors. By facing this side of the switch into the room I can spot exactly what's going on from across the way.
