Is this normal? Is there something wrong with the battery?** A: I’ve had this and have used it regularly for several years. Until recently I could vacuum steadily for 30-45 minutes on a charge. I never let it just sit on the charger but would charge it either overnight or for a number of hours before using it. It was great for a long time. Now it runs for just a couple minutes then quits but I can get the power back for more time almost immediately. Irritating, but it got the whole car cleaned before a trip last week. I’d hoped the lithium ion battery was replaceable but have not found that to be the case for this older model. I would - probably will have to - buy Black & Decker again. **Q: How many volts is this?** A: As Someone else mentioned, while this vacuum looks and smells and is even labeled the same as the previous version, it is not, including the Voltage. We had the previous version which was indeed 16V Lithium, and we loved it. Got a lot of use out of it and our young kids who were happy to help clean up with it; for about two years, when it died, just wouldn’t start anymore;So I ordered this one, which I thought to be a the same product, However, One of the changes in the design is that this vacuum now requires to be plugged in to be recharged, whereas the previous version had a charging base - you would just set it upright on the base and it would charge. Easy as pie, even for the kids. Based on the drama of endless empty personal devices, I knew this version was going to be a problem. I thought that a likely problem with the old one might be low battery cells and that I could replace them with cells from the β€œnew” model. I opened the vacuum to get to the battery. It is clear that battery replacement is not intended to be a consumer activity. The old unit had 4 cells each measuring approx. 4 Volts, which makes sense for a 16V rating(4x4V). The new vacuum, however, had only 3 cells and each measured 3.5V So I concluded that the problem with the old vacuum was unlikely to be with the battery, as each cell measured the same and together would provide the rated 16 Volts. Additionally, it appears that the new vacuum has a significant power reduction, at around 9 to 10 VOLTS as others have answered. (3.5V per Cell X 3 cells. I strongly share the comment that this should be clearly labeled on everything for an effective comparison **Q: Is the suction strong enough to pick up cat litter?** A: It will pick up litter. And then when you turn it off and hold it spout-down to hang it up, all the kitty litter falls out onto the floor. This thing is useless. **Q: Has the lack of charging issue been resolved for 2017?** A: Not sure as have not owned previous model. Makes clean-up a breeze! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ So far, excellent! *by D***D on September 9, 2018* I purchased this to replace our old Shark wireless hand vac, which was universally hated by my family. It was bigger, louder, much heavier, suction was about the same (fine) but the Shark used horrible old NiCad battery technology which I though was extinct by the time I purchased it. Yuck. Recently it died completely, so I was happy to order a replacement. I opted for this model for its low cost and overall really better reviews that a couple of more expensive B&D models. For this purchase, I was reluctant to try any of the numerous Chinese mystery brands available here on Amazon. I did look into other brands and models from other sources as well. I didn't need anything too powerful or fancy with a good Dyson standup vacuum & 2 sizes of shop vacs already on hand. On to this model. After reading reviews it looked like there was about a 20% chance of having battery life issues, with reports of 2-minute runtimes. So I figured I should give this unit a test ASAP do I could return it via Amazon's wonderful customer service instead of Black & Decker's, which seems to be almost universally disliked in reviews here. Luckily, early signs are that we dodged the battery life issue. After charging the new unit for 24 hours (16hrs minimum suggested) I ran the unit all around the house, garage and my car interior until the battery expired and the unit shut off. I ran my iPhone timer and it went about 13 minutes before it started to sound like it was slowing down, and right at 14 minutes it turned itself off. I am happy with a 13-minute runtime per charge as we mostly use it for spot cleaning for short durations. I'm very pleased about the shape of this thing as it can reach into nearly every nook and cranny I tried, far more than my old Shark ever could! The power is entirely adequate for light cleaning and did a fine job on things like the dusty cloth surface of my TV sound bar, window tracks, my garage workbench, car seats and the narrow space where my car dash meets the windshield, etc. So I'm almost totally satisfied with this vac, especially for the $32 price I paid. I am subtracting a star for two design choices related to charging though. First, there's no charging LED which I think is ridiculous to omit. You have no idea if this thing is really charging or not. I can only hope after draining it full for the first time that it actually is recharging right! Second, the AC adapter uses some weird propriety plastic tip I've never seen before, which is a concern if it ever breaks. Lastly, it looks like this thing takes forever to recharge. Mostly that won't be an issue here, but it's clearly a negative.
