What would it be like to live on a houseboat on the Mississippi River with two parents, four kids, eight chickens, several turtles, a dog, and a cat? Patsy and her family are about to find out! At first, Patsy is upset when her parents decide to move from their home in River City, Illinois, to a houseboat on the Mississippi River. She’ll miss her house and friends, and she’s sure the trip downriver will be boring. Gradually, she and her brother and sisters get used to their new life. Patsy grows to love the ever-changing river, where she even learns to swim. But she can’t help longing for a real house—on land. Houseboat Girl is based on the experiences of real families living on the Mississippi River in the summer of 1954.

Review: Houseboat Girl - Delightful story! This was one of my favorite Lois Lenski books as a child. I just read my grandson's copy, and I understand why I liked it so much. Living on a houseboat sounds like so much fun. The author's descriptions are so vivid that one feels like he is there. The pictures are wonderful, too. This book teaches some American history about people that could easily be overlooked, and it piques a child's imagination. I think every child should read all of Lois Lenski's books!

Delightful story! This was one of my favorite Lois Lenski books as a child. I just read my grandson's copy, and I understand why I liked it so much. Living on a houseboat sounds like so much fun. The author's descriptions are so vivid that one feels like he is there. The pictures are wonderful, too. This book teaches some American history about people that could easily be overlooked, and it piques a child's imagination. I think every child should read all of Lois Lenski's books!

I grew up reading Lois Lenski's books and can't believe I hadn't read this until recently. Lenski has a sensitive but not sentimental insight into a child's point of view. She's one of my favorite children's authors, She showed kids like me how other children lived in different regions and times. "I am a part of all I have met".
