It is a unit of it's own primarly for doors. It has a programmable code and a "chime" feature as well. It is VERY, VERY loud. The smaller units are not connect to the large one, nor or they connected to each other. They are loud, but not as loud as the large unit. They only have an "On/Off" switch, no code or "chime" setting. I bought some of the larger units seperately for my daughters to have on their aparment doors. **Q: help what kind of batteries does this take?** A: battery **Q: Do we need to use door alarm key pad to turn off window alarm?** A: The door alarm key pad in a unit all to itself. The key pad only operates the door alarm. The window alarms are themselves separate units. Each window alarm has "Off-Chime-Alarm" settings. The unit does not operate in the Off position. In the Chime position when the two pieces of the unit are separated by more than an 1/2 inch the Chime will sound. In the Alarm position the unit will sound its alarm when the two pieces of the unit are separated by more than an 1/2 inch. Changing password was easier than I though it would be. I had to change the tape because it wasn't sticking to my unstainted/unpainted door..
