Just find the port, plug in the OBD2 cable onto this one (OBDI), and you should be good to go. In my case, the E39 diagnostics port was located in Engine Bay. It seems to be compatible with older generation and model year BMWs utilizing the diagnostics port in the engine bay or the 20 Pin OBDI connectors. It reads fine, not super-fast like Ethernet connection, but about as fast as USB 2.0 will allow. Using ISTA+, this OBDI cable does everything I need.
