This did the trick! - I just put the Bissell steam mop through its paces and I'm moved to write a scintillating review. It arrived today and took all of five minutes to assemble. So simple a caveman can do it. I followed the directions (note to other dissatisfied reviewers) to the letter. Filled the reservoir with distilled water (not top water and DEFINITELY no chemicals) and selected the lowest steam setting once the ready light steadied after a short warm up. Before setting out on my steam adventure, I vacuumed all of the floors so everything was dirt free. Our house is a mix of laminate floors and stone. We also live in a chemical-free and fragrance-free house so I ditched the fragrance discs. We don't need the phony manmade smells. I went with the lightest setting for the laminate since I did not want to over-hydrate the flooring. I did a careful pattern, a stroke at a time, to ensure I went over the laminate wood twice. The upstroke laid down the steam and then the downstroke ensured the sturdy mop head did its job. Our floors weren't in terrible shape but there were dirt, smudges and streaking left over from the family holidays. Also having two dogs that seem to love to bring into the house anything they find outside rounded out the state of the flooring. I noticed immediately that the floors looked clean even though they were still a little damp. The mop glides nicely over the flooring and I gotta say it was kinda fun. A little music and I'm a cleaning machine. Curiosity got the better of me so I lifted up the mop and put my hand under to see how hot the steam is. Word to the wise... steam is hot. That's why it's steam. And steam hurts. After the floors and stairs, I proceeded to tackle the stone tile in the entry way, kitchen and bathrooms. Once again I felt it was cleaning it nicely. A quick examination of the formerly-white pad found that a dark grey color now adorned the pad. That showed me this was doing the trick. I increased the steam to the middle setting when doing the entryway. That's the dirtiest part of the house and I figured correctly that the extra steam wouldn't harm the stone. At the increased setting the mop turned into a dirt-busting dervish with nothing standing in it's way. Completing the steam adventure was a snap. Cleanup and proper mop storage took a just a minute. I did spend a good fifteen minutes fawning over my now clean floors. My wife was suitably impressed and commented frequently how nice everything looked. I do bleach them in the wash, but to the mops credit, it picks up so much filth they can look a little grey. But they ARE clean. If you're asking how long they last during a cleaning... I mop a large area like the kitchen, then I pick it up and peek under the mop to see how much I've picked up. If it's COVERED in dirt I change it, if I can still see the white of the pad I keep going. Hope that helped! **Q: Do you have to pump the handle (like a Shark) in order for the steam to release? Thank you.** A: No pumping required. Once you set the steam level (Low, Medium or High), there is continuous steam until you push the steam level button again to select "off," or unplug it.I probably should elaborate that a lot of people don't seem to realize there is a way to turn the steam off aside from unplugging the power cord. No "off" switch is probably one of the most frequent complaints I see in the reviews. The off control is the same button that controls the steam level. Push the button once for Low steam, push again for Medium steam, push again for High steam, and push it a fourth time to turn the steam OFF. So, although there is no separate off/on switch (which I don't find to be a problem at all), the mop CAN be turned off without unplugging the power cord. **Q: Can this be used on hardwood floors?** A: Well at a flooring store there was a sign saying NOT to use any STEAM on hardwood floors.....doing so will negate your factory warranty... **Q: Can Pinesol be added to the water?** A: NO!! Bissell recommends using only distilled water. Obviously those saying "yes" didn't read the User's Guide. There are multiple warnings throughout the User's Guide that comes with the mop that plainly says: "Never put descaling , aromatic, alcoholic or detergent products into the steam cleaner, as this may damage it or make it unsafe for use." That means no white vinegar, no essential oils, no cleaners like Pinesol. Nothing but water, and preferably DISTILLED water and not tap water. You run the risk of having the mop plug up and stop steaming if you add anything else to the tank...and doing so will void the valuable 2 year manufacturer's warranty you get with this mop. If you feel you must use some type of cleaner in conjunction with the steam, add a little directly to the floor so it is not going through the working components of the mop. However, just be aware that if you use cleaner (directly on the floor), you pretty much defeat the advantages of cleaning with steam, i.e., #1. Avoiding potentially harmful chemicals and fumes, #2. no rinsing and rinsing ... and rinsing (and no soapy residue left behind), and #3. not having to spend extra money on floor cleaning products. Believe me, this mop cleans so well you do not need to use cleaners, at all. The steam does it all -- loosens dirt, grime and even residue from previous products, and it sanitizes. Truly, the first time I used this mop, it removed old, dried paint splatters out of the crevices of a textured vinyl floor! You don't need to complicate things. I use it about once a month as a deeper clean for my floors, with a regular mop in between, and I feel much better knowing I'm giving the floors a thorough steam cleaning. It's lightweight and very easy to use. I can fill the water tank once and clean my entire floor without having to stop and refill it, which is a huge convenience. I also really love the scent pucks that go underneath the cleaning pad. They leave the house smelling amazing after I'm finished, and the scent is a nice bonus on top of the cleaning. The cord is another feature I appreciate. It's nice and long, so I don't constantly have to stop and move to another outlet. When I'm finished, it wraps neatly around the built-in cord storage.
