When I see a hamburger, I'm going to think, "It took 1300 gallons of water to produce that burger." If I'm tempted to buy one-use plastic, I'm going to remember that only 9% of the plastic in this country is recyclable. The micro-plastics that get in the ocean and are eaten by fish, I learned, might end up in my body. And gum! The next time I unwrap a stick, I'll remember that it takes hundreds of years for gum to decompose. And, if it ends up in the ocean, it'll make fish sick. I'll also be more aware of greenwashing, or companies pretending to be conscious of the environment by doing things like emblazoning a leaf on a plastic bottle. Buyer beware. The author, Mel Hammond, encourages us to be kind as we educate people. We can be firm, ask for change, and write letters, but it's not helpful to shame people. We can focus on the positive changes we see and encourage one another to continue improving. It might be as much fun as making totes our of old t-shirts or giving vegies fun names.
