It's like a vinyl, a very thin vinyl, so it can stretch a bit. I would be surprised to see it tear at all. I had both of my dogs go in and out of the crate many times to see if they could break through it and they didn't and their claws didn't go through it either. It's incredibly easy to clean. Because it's kind of stretchy and it doesn't scratch very easily all you have to do is wipe it down. There is a slightly metallic speckle to it that's just beautiful.
