I would say the only downsides are if you can't use the included L bracket to mount the sensor, and you must affix a magnet. For my use case, this was going onto a milling machine I was converting to run on a VFD with a modern controls system. I wanted to have an accurate tachometer, so I knew what the spindle speed was. This has worked well. Here's a tip when installing this. Power it up and before you install the magnet, move it over the sensor. If you don't get a reading, flip the magnet and retest. Mark the side which needs to be affixed to whatever you're trying to measure the RPM of, so that you ensure you keep the magnet orientated properly. I didn't do this and unfortunately it didn't work, so I had to break the adhesive loose, and redo it. I wish the magnet was marked out of the box so you knew this up front. I'm not going to knock it down, but I do wish this had a wider voltage range of say 8-26V. I am running a 24VDC control system and had to use a small 24 -> 12 volt step down converter to power only this tachometer. That was my oversight and there are other similar devices available with a wider voltage range. Other than it hanging onto the RPM for a bit after the spindle stops, I've found it to be quite reliable and accurate. The camera shutter speed is what causes the display to be difficult to photograph, but in person it's easy to read with no issues. I used a magnetic navigational compass to determine north/south of the provided magnet. When I mounted south pole toward the sensor, it didn't work. Turned it around and it did. I epoxied the magnet so unmounting was a nuisance. Connection was simple, just be sure to follow instruction on wire colors. Your switch, I presume, switches 120VAC to the lathe if you live in the U.S., and 240VAC if you live in Europe, England, or a few other countries. It would make for a nice fireworks display if you connected this device to a higher AC voltage. What I did was to buy a small 120VAC to 12VDC low current power supply, and it was about the size of a small box of matches, perhaps an inch (25mm) on the longest side. The power supply and display come on with the switch, and report on my lathe's RPM just nicely. By drilling the pulley and replacing with a different density material you may change the balance and induce vibration.
