When in plier open position (‘using other tools’ per your question), Yes, blade can open about one inch from handle leaving enough space for an entire adult pinkie finger to slide under blade. I own this knife and love it, but this is a major design oversight. I actually use this flaw as a wire stripper which works quite well. The strange part is there is a cut out on the tool allowing the blade to open into this position, it was machined this way. Current owners, try opening yours, notch on blade fits perfectly into handle notch when opening blade about 1” in plier position. . . . **Q: Just got the skeletool cx, but can anyone suggest a good oil to use on the joints ( a little to tough opening )** A: Invest in a Torx screwdriver set, and slightly loosen the pivot screw to the blade. You may need to periodically re-snug the screw to keep it at that 'just right' tension, but it is much easier to deploy than the factory screw tightness. **Q: Is this indeed a skeletool cx with a combo serrated blade** A: Prior to 2012, the SkeleTool CX had a half-serrated 154CM blade and the normal SkeleTool (the all stainless steel one) had a non-serrated 420HC blade (still good quality. Just not quite as good). Around 2013, the blade styles were swapped. The CX got a non-serrated blade. And the regular model got a half-serrated one.
