In my opinion there should have been at least some side effects during the initial "purging period" when I first started this product. With real retinol, almost everyone has a period of flaking, irritation, breakouts, etc. It's called the "purge". Sure enough with my prescription retinol my skin was very irritated (because it's very real and very strong). If this product was indeed "5%" which is very very strong, I would have most definitely had some irritation... I didn't at all. 😐 I would say it's probably equivalent to Carave over the counter products.
