I am not sure I quite understand the question, but one can obviously use longer screws if necessary, or use machine screws and nuts as I had to do to fix the magnets to a fiberglass sheet. - I used the magnets to secure a fiberglass sheet to a steel door, as I did not want to drill holes in the door. **Q: Do they magnetize on the back side? If i didn't want to screw them down would they still work?** A: Not well. **Q: can they be painted ?** A: While I haven't tried to paint mine, I'm sure you could paint them with the correct paint/spray paint. However keep in mind that the magnets are strong, and anything you place this on will most likely chip off paint on the bottom. And if you store them together in a stack, I'd imagine the paint will likely chip just due to the strength of the magnets.
