Review: A mood piece, not a comedy - The first time I watched this movie, I "kind-of" liked it, thought it was quirky, interesting, slyly humourous, and very slightly depressing. Then I left it for a while. Then I came back, and watched it again. And I liked it more. And I kept coming back. It has crept up on me slowly, and is now one of my favourite movies ever. It isn't a "laugh out loud" joke-fest, like most of the negative reviewers seem to want. It's a (platonic) love story with a realistic ending, not the "happy ending" that (again) many of the negative reviews seem to want. True, the script is sparse, but that because it's a mood-piece more than a story. In a similar feel to the superb "Paris, Texas" by Wim Wenders, I can otherwise think of nothing else that gives one the same warm feeling of... what exactly? Nostalgia (for something that never was)? Regardless, come to this with an open mind, and an open heart, and you will be rewarded with one of the best movies for years. Probably more accessible to the more emotionally mature audience, rather than the younger "big action" teenagers who only want big thrills and big laughs. It has neither. Instead it was a slowly building tension and attraction, both between the main characters, and for the audience. Something to watch to warm the heart and calm the jangling nerves.
Review: Perfect in its own way - Lost in Translation does something few other American films do (Stillwell's Metropolitan is the other one), and that is to give us a drama that consists of silences and dialogue, with no action. Only the French (e.g. Rohmer) do this well and consistently. It makes for intelligent scripting, nuanced acting, and rivetting viewing. For older men (like myself) it sets out calmly and without too much emotion the dilemma of meeting someone who is right thirty or forty years too late. By setting this late love in such an exotic and alienating place (the hotel and Tokyo beyond it), there is no need to exaggerate the emotions of the two main characters. Those reviewers who have given the film one star may be lacking a maturity of understanding that a film like this calls for. If you like understated French cinema, you'll revel in this. If only Hollywood allowed more films of this genre to be made, its reputation would receive a huge boost.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A subtle work of art
*by K***A on 29 July 2007*

Those who do not like this film possibly would not appreciate a beautiful landcsape in the middle of nowhere, either. Things do not have to happen to be interesting. There is such a thing called subtlety. I thought this was Bill Murray's best film so far and also that of Scarlett Johnansson. There are some scenes which are very funny. The soundtrack is excellent. If you like intelligent, thoughtful, different films then watch this. I think the ending is perfect.
