You will have to try both ways and you will find they fit. I slid mine over the lower pole first them attached the rest of the birdfeeder. Mine has with withstood the high winds. When I refill feeders I just push down on each of the feet to keep it straight. I hope this helps **Q: My bird feeder has fallen over tonight in rain. Will this fit any feeder that is hit into ground ??** A: Don't know about the size of your upright pole .but mine is metal similar in size to a broom handle thickness. The spikes base comes with a thread bolt to tighten on the upright. Stepping down on the spikes is a good way of setting it in then tighten the bolt off.after mine hasn't fell over yet and I av had 3 wood pigeons eating and squabbling on it **Q: Will this base fit most poles? And is it already to use?** A: Hello. I believe this will fit most poles. We have two slightly different sized feeding stations and the base was fine with both of them. **Q: Is it difficult to hammer fully into the ground? Does it have an area on it where you can hammer it in?** A: Hi. I tap the centre pole into its location first. I then slide the stabiliser over the one then tap the top of the legs bit by bit into the ground. When it feels stable then tighten up the nuts and job is done. If your ground is soft you can just put your foot on it to bed it in.
