It's great when traveling overseas. I used this in Hong Kong and Australia (bought SIM cards over there at a really low price), and I was able to get great wifi reception the entire time. I would highly recommend carrying a battery pack for when/if this device starts to run low on battery while you're out an about (it will keep working when it's plugged into a battery pack). I used my smartphone as my GPS and would use this wifi hotspot mostly for this purpose as well as messaging people. I would be cognizant of the SIM card data plan you that decide to purchase.
