There is just an option for how long it will stay on after it gets activated. You can however turn off the whole thing when not in use. My family has run out the batteries by activating the hippo with our coughing when the hippo is left on. **Q: How senstive is it? How close do you have to put hippo? Mine never goes off to baby's cry.** A: My 10 month old has learned to call out in a certain pitch to make his go off. I think it's a certain tone that activates it more than the loudness. **Q: Does it play white noise?** A: No it does not, but it does play icean waves which on my opinion sounds close to white noise. We have a Summer Infant lamb that plays white noise. **Q: Is there an option to make the stars flash?** A: They don't actually flash, but they do fade in and out and they are multi-colored. This is a wonderful toy, it plays music or does nature sounds and tells some nursery rhymes and the stars are very appealing as well.
