It can be used with the straw installed or removed. If the straws fitted then you can suck with no need to tip the bottle up to drink. The straw is useful if you have lots of ice in the bottle as you'll be drinking the coldest liquid at the bottom and it'll stop any ice from blocking the drinking hole. The outer plastic feels nice and not cheap at all. The lid tightens securely and doesn't leak at all in my experience. The drinking tube flips up and had a rubber/silicone surround to it. Once it's push down the bottles sealed and won't leak - Works really well and plan to use it as my new gym bottle. I couldn't find a use for the metal clasp and it's annoying having it rattling so I removed it. The addition of the little grab handle make it perfect for the gym.
