## Description

From the manufacturer ARCHIVE AND SHARE Designed specifically for medium or large scale business customers, WD Red Pro drives are available up to 20TB and built for up to 24-bay NAS systems. For the Demands of Big Business Engineered to handle high-intensity workloads in 24/7 environments, WD Red Pro is ideal for archiving and sharing, as well as RAID array rebuilding on extended operating systems such as ZFS or other file systems. These drives add value to your business by enabling your employees to quickly share their files and back-up folders reliably in your NAS solution. Larger NAS Bay Shock Protection WD Red Pro drives are equipped with a multi-axis shock sensor that automatically detects subtle shock events and dynamic fly height technology which adjusts each read-write function to compensate and protect the data. This combination of technology further protects the drives in larger 1 to 24 bay NAS environments and helps increase hard drive reliability. 24/7 Environment Since your NAS system is always on, a reliable drive is essential. With an MTBF of up to 1 million hours, the WD Red Pro drive is engineered to tackle 24/7 environments. 3D Active Balance Plus Cooler operations and enhanced reliability Helps ensure your data is protected from excessive vibration and noise in a NAS or RAID environment. This dual-plane balance control reduces the degradation of your drive over time. By reducing power consumption, the operating temperature of your NAS stays cool. With a lower temperature in your system, you can create a more reliable solution for your NAS. The Power of Red comes to SSD Step up to enterprise-class performance Boost your NAS system’s performance and responsiveness with the WD Red SA500 NAS SATA SSD. Unlike standard SSDs, WD Red NAS SATA SSDs are purpose built for endurance and efficient caching. Specifically designed for use in enterprise-class storage systems and data centers, the WD Gold Enterprise Class HDD delivers the world-class performance you expect from Western Digital hard drives.

Review: Old school but cost per TB with this sort of reliability wins over SSD - If NVMe speed is not the driving factor rather a reliable backup is then these are a good alternative I run 2 of these in a RAID 0 set giving me 32TB of backup space and they are very good, Performance is surprisingly fast and as its just two disks after 4 years I'll mothball these as a backup of that day and pop in two new ones (in 4 years time that's more likely to be SSD). Today though with an inexpensive Enclosure its an inexpensive and reliable backup solution when you need high volume backups. I use these as a fast tertiary backup so Raid 0 is fine. I would never recommend Raid 0 as your only backup option.
Review: Ridiculous price but a good drive - Just performed an extended Smart (S.M.A.R.T) test on this 20TB drive via DSM on my Synology DS220J NAS. Test reports the drive is healthy and total power on time was 0, as you'd expect for a brand new drive. So all is working well. I purchased this drive from desertcart and they delivered it too. Packaging was sufficient but really, for an item of such high value, I wish they would do better. It essentially came in a cardboard box with some brown paper used to pad it out - only on one side of the box though - should be on both, and at the sides! Fortunately though, the WD box itself is fairly well packaged with some plastic inserts to hold the drive in place and prevent it making contact with the edges of the box itself. The box was also sealed with a clear plastic label which looked original to me. The drive itself was within an antistatic bag. So the drive is packaged in the WD box quite well - desertcart, not so much. But it arrived in good condition and it's working - that's all that matters. As for the price - the only word I can use to describe it is 'ridiculous'. Not only in the sense that AI data centers are pushing HDD prices up across the board, but the price on desertcart seems to change every five minutes. I won't say any more than that as this review will probably get blocked but desertcart has a 'price history' feature, which I'd encourage you to use. I've never had a WD NAS grade drive before so can't comment on longevity, but my expectations are that this should last at least 5 years and if that proves not to be true, you can guarantee I will come back and update this review!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: 4 of these drives good for 32tb 24/7 dlna nas server? Don’t want to beat a dead horse here... Really it’s just to stream my 10Bit 4K movies using DLNA**
A: It all depends on what size and what RAID configuration you are asking about. Most people would be using RAID 5 or something like Synology's SHR (similar to RAID 5 but doesn't require equal size hard drives) for this purpose. If you are thinking that 4x8TB will give you 32TB of storage that is not correct in RAID 5 because of the overhead used for data protection. It works like this for RAID 5, 4x8TB = 24TB storage, 4x10TB = 30TB storage, 4x12 = 36TB storage. So first determine which RAID configuration works best for you and then find a RAID calculator available online to choose your RAID configuration and hard drive size. If you just want speed, with no parity checking then you could go with 4x8TB or 2x16 TB (whichever is cheaper) in RAID 0 for 32TB of storage but file corruption could be an issue and there is a possibility that you can only do 2 hard drives in RAID depending on your hardware.
Having said all that, these drives will certainly stream 4k 10-bit HDR movies over DLNA. Streaming 4k is just as much up to the software and hardware of your computer than it is the hard drives. A nicely configured Windows machine, for example, may stream them fine however a less powerful NAS device may not. There are a lot of moving parts but these drives will not be an issue. There are also issues with playing the 265 codecs in Windows 10 Media Player but the same files that will not play in Media Player, will stream via DLNA to my LG TV just fine and play in full 2160p HDR with no problem. These same files will show up fine in my 9 year old NAS but will not stream via DLNA on it but photos stream fine. So it all depends on your exact configuration. But the drives are fine.
If it all gets too hard then just get a fast (say 400 MB per second) USB stick and copy 10 movies at a time on to it and plug it into your TV. The Samsung BAR Plus 256 GB works well for this in my experience. You can also look into getting streaming server software on your computer and a client connected to your TV.

**Q: What is the difference between this and the WD Black drive?**
A: The Red is engineered for 24/7 usage. The Black is not.

**Q: Is the red wd drives better for cctv/nvr in raid setup than the purple drives? i hear purple drives are not lasting long. both red and purple are 24/7**
A: I use my purple drives with 9 cameras 24 x 7 and have over three years without a single failure. pretty good if you ask me.

**Q: Can I use this as an external storage for my desktop?**
A: I have four of the earlier 3tB versions of this drive in external USB3 enclosures and use them in rotation for critical full system backups. They have served very well in that capacity. I also have one of the 3tB drives in my main daily-driver computer now and it does that quite well although it isn't as fast as some but since it is used mostly for secondary data store it doesn't matter so much. The reason that I have so many of the older 3tB drives is that I upgraded all of the drives in my Drobo NAS to 6tB drives a while back. Those drives as well as five of the 8tB units in another NAS have worked perfectly so I can highly recommend them (for the proper use, of course).

### ⭐ Noisy drives
*by L***E on 14 January 2026*

Fortunately these arrived in a working state, unlike some others. But after months and months of trying to get these to stop making noise every 3-4 secs in a Asustor NAS, it turns out its own self protection is keeping the drive active even when the drive has zero data on it. FYI yes Asustor NAS have issues with SSD caching and Roon App issues which accesses all drives, I have never used or activated either. Wasted +£600 on noisy drives.
