I've used these replacement filters for my 10 gallon aquarium for almost 20 years and all the boxes have small carbon bits in them. In fact, I shake new filters carbon side down over a trash can to get all the little tiny pieces out so they don't wind up in the aquarium and building up over time. My practice is shake them for about 5 seconds, then rinse under a faucet carbon side down before I start on a filter cleaning and set aside on the sink to drain. I pour about 1 quart of old aquarium water over them right before installing to rinse out any chlorine from the faucet rinse. **Q: Are these similar in size to cartridges size E?** A: No, they are smaller than Cartridges size E. Size E is for 20-40 gallon tanks, these are for 5-15 gallon tanks.
