Much better than expected
In almost every review I read about these "fake dogs", people complain that they don't sound like the real thing. To those people, all I can say is that it ISN'T the real thing. I'm not sure what brand they purchased, but everyone ( friends and relatives ) who come by think mine is a real dog. I have it sitting on the window sill by my back door and I usually keep it on all the time. The barks aren't random ( first one bark, then three, then five or six as long as there is motion ). If motion is only detected for a few moments, then it starts over, which makes the barking more random. Since I leave it on all the time, I sometimes find myself yelling at it to shut up before I realize I'm yelling at a machine. This unit also has two other sounds besides the dog. The first is a chime similar to a regular doorbell, and the other is an alarm. I only use mine for the dog bark since I already have multiple alarms and doorbells. It also runs on 6 AA batteries in case the power goes out, but my whole security system has redundant backup power supply, several UPS units, and backup wireless internet and routers. To backup my own system, I also have ADT Pulse with cameras, smoke detectors, motion detectors, alarms, which I can monitor through my phone, iPad, or laptop. Same for my own system. Anyhow, I am very pleased with this Apesto unit and I plan on getting another for the front door. I'm sure that if I knew it wasn't a real dog and I listened to it for ten straight minutes, I wouldn't be fooled, but it can definitely take anyone by surprise. For all the security I have, this little unit probably offers the most "bang for the buck" than anything I have. For less than $100, you can have one these and 7 or 8 dummy cameras and for a lot of people this may be all they need to make a burglar look for an easier target. Great deal for the money.

Not quite what I expected.
Wow, did I really pay $59 for this? In my opinion, this is more like a $39 item at most. First, though I think the barking does sound quite real, it's a bit too "hollow." It would almost seem that the dog is in an empty house. Second, the volume at max setting is not very loud. It's a big dog kind of barking with a little voice. More volume would have added to the effectiveness of the unit. So far, the comments I've gotten when someone hears it has not been reassuring. I guess the biggest disappointment is when I saw a cat staring at the unit, not more than 3 feet away. I'm thinking that if the unit sounded more real, the cat would have stayed away. The radar which is suppose to be 360 degrees might be, but it is more sensitive on certain sides of the unit. For example, I can walk in front of the unit and not set it off, but if I walk to the side of the unit, it picks up my movement. It does "see" movement behind a wall. I may try a setting other than the barking though the barking is what I really wanted. Not sure yet if this is going back, but there is a good chance that it is.

It you want a dog get this
It works, but you need a specific need for this type of unit. It picks up movement on a 360 degree basis. The problem is that it works through walls or anytime you come near it. So I cannot find a place where it will alert me to intruders and not work on the family as we walk around the house. It is made for the inside so it goes off constantly as you move around the house. Its more like having a dog that keeps barking at me instead of at outside threats.

Such an intelligent tiny green dog
Our neighborhood has had lots of home break-ins lately, so we bought one of these to supplement our simple noise-maker burglar alarm. The goal is to scare off a thief casing the outside of the house while we aren't around. I didn't have high expectations but it's actually not bad if you adjust it properly.Apesto The Sentry is omni-directional. It detects motion in all directions. Sometimes I think that it may even detect birds landing on the roof above it. I put The Sentry in the garage using the adaptor that they provide (even though there are provisions for batteries to be used, we had no need for it though). The Sentry went through stucco walls really well. I placed it next to the wall. It covered the part of the driveway leading up to my front porch, the front porch itself and beyond. I said "beyond", because The Sentry even detected motion in the kitchen on the other side of the porch. It barked when I moved around in the kitchen. My solution was to use an appliance timer. The Sentry will turn on and off at whatever times of day or night you program the timer. This is so convenient and we time The Sentry to come on at 12 midnight and shut off at 6:00 AM. That way we can walk into the garage and kitchen during the day without having to disarm The Sentry. If you set the sensitivity to LOW, but put The Sentry in front of a door, one can walk thru the hall without setting off The Sentry, and The Sentry will still bark loud when someone enters the room where it's positioned. I highly recommend. The barking does sound mechanical and repetitive, when one takes time to listen to it carefully, but I doubt that an occasional burglar will stick around and listen to The Sentry. It is not as good as a real dog, but it will do as a burglar deterrent. By the way, if you want to get a real dog, please go to your local animal shelter for one. Don't buy it from a pet shop.

Don't buy the Apesto
I bought it to keep armadillos, rabbits, racoons, etc away from my yard. It was a complete and total failure. The motion sensor only worked some of the time and only detected motion up close, less than 10 feet. The barking feature had very low volume and wouldn't scare anything away. The directions were impossible to read, but that is true of every mechanical or electrical device I have ever bought, so I would give Apesto an average rating. But only because the competition in this arena is always miserable. The only thing that worked well was the cardboard shipping box. I saved that and put it to good use.I felt and feel totally gypped out of my money, but was so frustrated that I threw it out. I figured they wouldn't refund my money anyway.I have never written a review this negative. Never. I hope it has some positive impact.
