Acetyl L-Carnitine is similar in form and function to an amino acid. Acetyl L-Carnitine is the acetyl ester of L-Carnitine, and is a source of both L-Carnitine and an acetyl group. In its role as a precursor for the formation of acetylcholine (an important neurotransmitter), this compound help enhance cognitive functions. This nutrient also facilitates the transport of long-chain fatty acids to enable beta-oxidation and energy generation, thus enhancing physical performance.If you choose to believe these extravagant claims (notice the weasel phrases "designed to", "similar in form and function to") which have not been evaluated by the FDA, more power to you. In fact, I feed this to my dog, who has dilated cardiomyopathy. The veterinarian prescribed this to help her cardiac function, on the theory that it can't hurt. I have not noticed that she is discernibly any smarter. Then, I googled reviews on this amino acid to find out about other people's experiences. It turns out that it is prescribed to Alzheimer's patients and older adults for memory loss.I touched base with my pharmacist and Dr --- I wanted to know whether or not it could be harmful either alone or in combination with my other medications. As a grad student, I was having serious difficulty with the work. I can tell that my brain is working better. I no longer have problems retaining and analyzing information.
