The button on the actual flashlight has to be in the "ON" position for the remote pressure switch to work. What I found interesting is if both the on-flashlight and remote switches are on (you can then see the beam), you can then press the on-flashlight switch LIGHTLY to get the reduced output, strobe, or SOS modes to work. But this only works if the flashlight is turned on.
