His unique approach produced the first Buck Knife in 1902. Hoyt made each knife by hand, using worn-out file blades as raw material. His handiwork was greatly appreciated during World War II. Hoyt's eldest son Al had relocated from the Pacific Northwest to San Diego California after finishing a stint in the navy a decade earlier. Hoyt and his wife Daisy moved in with Al and his young family in 1945 and set up shop as H.H. Buck and Son. Following the death of his father, Al kept the fledgling custom knife business going until incorporating Buck Knives, Inc. in 1961. Al introduced his son, Chuck, to the knife business at an early age and Chuck and his wife, Lori, were both involved when the company was incorporated. I have custom knives for 4 times the cost of this knife that will not match the fit and finish. **Q: What is the widest width of the Buck 103? Thanks for your help!!!** A: my 103 is approximately an 1" 1/8...hope that helps. **Q: How well does this knife do in other stuff outside of skinning?** A: I've never subscribed to the theory that every cutting task requires a special knife. The Buck Skinner can likely be used for many cutting chores, but skinning and caping are it's strong points. Not as hefty as an original I had from 40 years ago (gifted that one to a guide on a mule deer hunt in the 80's), but the design works very well. I also prefer the 'old school' flap style sheath, but hey, things change! You cannot beat the warranty and sharpening service. I had a General and a Skinner which I returned for refinishing and sharpening, and they were stunning when I got them back. Buck stands behind their products! **Q: How does this do as food prep ?** A: It should be fine but I never use mine for anything but skinning.
