The dogs stand right on it and it does nothing for them. I tried with my hand as well the 'shock' was so faint it was barely noticeable. I gave it 4 stars because it works as it should, but I wish you could turn off the beep that goes off before the shock.This worked great for keeping one of my two problem cats off of the counter. He got shocked one time and has not been up there since. The other cat has not actually been shocked as far as I know, but jumps down when he hears the beeping. As long as I have it on the counter, he does not get up there or at least doesn't stay up there. I was really hoping that it would teach them both not to get up there at all (as it did for the first one) so I wouldn't need it out all the time.EDIT: Stopped working after 5 months.
