I already have a Pentair softener, and it has been working well for some time without any issues. It is also worth noting that many filter housings include marketing claims, but they are not NSF certified for material safety for potable water—this one is. I have never done plumbing before, but I was able to complete a decent installation. Currently, the setup is as follows: well water first passes through a Rusco sediment filter with an auto-flush valve (which I configured using a normally closed ball valve and a timer), then through the Pentair softener, and finally through a Big Blue filter. For the final stage, I am using the Pentair Pentek EP-BB Big Blue Carbon Water Filter (10-inch whole-house carbon block replacement cartridge with bonded powdered activated carbon), which is also NSF certified. The Rusco sediment filter is auto-flushed for one minute every day. After the job, there were zero leaks.
