The salt is coarse and unmolded - it will rub off in your hand if you touch it. The stand is very sturdy and has several divots so you can position it how you want without the cord getting in the way. The larger rocks come with a cord on/off switch rather than having to plug and unplug each day and is ultra convenient. Depending on how dark the salt is will determine how much light it gives off - we happened to get a deep dark pink and a very light pink and the light pink lights up the room quite a bit - I block some of the light with a book so it doesn't bother me if I turn towards it while sleeping. It gets slightly warm, but not warm enough that you need to avoid it touching other things.
