They are wood, so much stronger. **Q: Is this the original version or the smaller version?** A: This one is about 15" high. They make more challeng versions than this, too. I bought this for my nieces who are 11 and 13. My grandson loves the game but quickly loses interest because it's so hard to get the sticks in!** A: My 5 year old will insert about 50% of the sticks and then I have to complete the last ones because he gets frustrated and gives up. I too, get a little aggravated as it is definitely a tedious task for such a “quick” game. However, we love playing this game together and end up laughing at each other as we lose our marbles.
