We partnered with a village of weavers in India to produce this silk specially for soap makers. The empty cocoons are gathered by hand in the forests of the Eastern Ghats and gently cleaned and combed to create the purest tussah silk possible. Contrary to popular belief, commercial tussah silk is not a "peace" silk. More than 99% of tussah silk production comes from farms where larvae are raised in frames, fed on oak leaves, and then boiled during the degumming process. They are not allowed to exit the cocoon on their own because they would cut the long strands of silk that are desirable for spinning yarn. Most commercial tussah silk is highly processed. Antibiotics are used to keep the larvae healthy in crowded growing frames, chemical solvents are used for degumming, and the silk is treated with bleaches and dyes. Our cruelty-free tussah silk is 100% natural. No bleaches, dyes, or antibiotics are ever used. This is silk at its purest and rawest. Our wild-gathered tussah silk is tested and approved by soap makers. A few pinches of fiber, gently teased apart, will dissolve easily in lye. The silk proteins will give soap a luxurious silky feel and a subtle sheen, without any of the chemical additives found in other brands of tussah silk. Using a few pinches per loaf, a single 2-ounce package is enough for more than a hundred batches. The hand-carded fiber (R) is made from cocoons that are gently brushed into sheets of raw silk. The combed top/sliver (L) has been run through a carding machine to produce a uniform roving. Both forms have the same benefits for soap makers, and can be used in exactly the same way. Take one or two small pinches of silk from the carded or combed fiber. Gently tease the threads apart with your fingers, pulling apart any strands that are stuck together. The fluffed out silk should be about the size of a cotton ball, maybe a little smaller. There's no need to add more; a little goes a long way. Hold the silk fibers in one hand and use scissors to cut them into smaller pieces. This step can be skipped if you're in a hurry, but it will help the silk dissolve more easily later. Scatter the cut up silk strands into whatever mixing bowl you will use to make your lye solution. Measure out the distilled water called for in your recipe, and pour it over the cut up silk. Let it soak for 5 or 10 minutes. This is another step that will help the silk dissolve more easily. Add lye as called for in your soap recipe, and stir to dissolve*. The silk threads will break down into silk proteins as the lye reacts with the water. Now you can continue with your recipe. After the soap has set, it will have the wonderful silky feeling that wild-gathered tussah silk adds. *Lye is extremely caustic. Please read your manufacturer's Material Data Sheet (MDS) before using lye products and observe all suggested precautions, including wearing gloves and goggles.
