Use a 75 or 100 watt bulb, if rated for 100 watts, and keep the lamp down low. As the chicks grow, raise the lamp and reduce the wattage. Be sure to use an incandescent bulb because LED bulbs do not emit enough heat to warm the chicks. Do not use a heat lamp bulb unless you use a fireproof (metal) brooder and have the light about 3 feet away, according to the lamp's guidelines. Also you must have a ceramic socket, not a plastic one. I do not use a heat lamp bulb on any chicks, but then I live in the South where it is beginning to get warm in March/April. If you live in the cold North, then I can't give you an answer. **Q: how wide will the clamp open?** A: The clamp opens 3" if you are fairly strong. So far so good. Its alot easier than panel lights and was very cost effective leaving me to spend more on light bulbs and other gardening necessities. I plan to order 2 more to clip on beds for reading lamps. They don't get hot with these special purple LED bulbs in so I hope the same is true with just a regular bulb.
