Not the case with this gel, however - it is not irritating at all, and I find it somewhat soothing to the skin. It works well for softening and lubricating the beard, gives an excellent close shave, rinses easily from your face and the razor, and a little goes a long way.It does require a wet face, and occasionally a little additional water during shaving, as it seems to dry quickly; but the results are excellent. It feels like a combination of aloe vera and glycerin (think K-Y jelly). Sure enough, the second ingredient is Aloe, and the fourth ingredient is glycerin. (The first ingredient is "aqua", which is parenthetically defined as water. Inside joke perhaps?) Unfortunately, aloe may be soothing for burns, but isn't a great lubricant, and glycerin quickly goes from lubricating to tacky as it dries. That's exactly what shaving with this gel feels like: little to no lather, spreads on thick (goopy), starts drying out at around 60 seconds and soon has to be re-wet and spread before continuing.It does, however, elicit thoughts of "primal" things. Like sharpened rocks, wooden wheels, pointy sticks, grass underwear, pig bladder socks and other benefits of the primal life.
