Because they contain boric acid (sounds harsh, but it's the same as in contact lens solution) they not only clean any drainage, but it also seems to lighten and clean existing stains. Everyone recommended Angel Eyes brand, and they were fine for new draining, but they don't work at all on existing stains. These are WAY better. I switched my dogs food, removed all chicken from his diet and wash glass bowls daily, so I have have next to no tear stain issues anymore. However, they are still fabulous for an occasional cleaning when needed.
