It doesn't necessarily have to be nails, it can be where 2 pieces of metal come together, but just something to hang them from. Each reflector rod has a thin elastic loop attached at one end so you can hang it. There is also a hole on the other end of the rod, so there are holes on each end of the rod so that if you want, you can attach multiple rods to each other. You don't have to use the elastic loop that comes attached to the rod to hang it. You can use a zip lock tie, which is what I've done, depending on where you are hanging it.I've hung some from very thin branches of a bush, where I used zip lock ties to make sure they were firmly attached to the super thin branch and wouldn't fly off in windy weather. I used the silver, shiny ones and the birds still ate about 1/3 of my peaches, or more.
