But this persistent cough puzzled me, and when I almost passed out one morning after a coughing fit one of my fellow teachers let me use her inhaler (which helped) and told me she thought I must have asthma. This made no sense to me, as I had great lung power when I was young and could swim the length of a pool underwater. True, I was occasionally short of breath now, but who wouldn't be after coughing so much?But I followed the rest of her advice and went to a doctor.He asked all sorts of questions, put me through all sorts of tests, and we even tried all sorts of remedies until he began to realize it all fit a pattern: I had occasional indigestion, sometimes slept poorly toward morning, and even woke up almost hoarse some mornings. I was lately experiencing shortness of breath, and coughed almost every morning...Long story short: a hiatal hernia--a tearing of my diaphragm allowed a small portion of my stomach to protrude and rest against my windpipe (forgive me: my esophagus), and the acidic nature of the food I loved caused my breathing problems in the morning: my esophagus was irritated--especially in the morning after a night of lying horizontally in bed.It turns out a lot of people have this problem: people can be very active in sports in their youth, and over time the diaphragm can have small lesions that allow such a medical condition to occur. The symptoms can in fact be so dramatic as to make some people feel they are experiencing a heart attack.Anyway, a little curtailing of my menu (going light on some spicier foods) and two little 20 mg. famotidines (the same basic medicine as in Pepsid AC), and I'm fine, and I stay that way as long as I remember to keep them at hand and take them EVERY day TWICE a day. Missing one is rarely a problem. Missing two, however, is often NOT good.The truth is that I should curtail all acidic, rough foods from my diet, but I refuse to do without lettuce, tomatoes, caffeine, and some other foods that I feel would not only restrict me from enjoying myself, but also might make it hard on others who invite me and my wife over, or have other such occasions to eat or drink. Should I still have occasional heartburn, a chewable antacid (like Tums, or Rolaids) does the trick. But I always take my famotidine regardless,A NOTE: Famotidine is for chronic problems, not for acute ones. In other words: it's not made to handle a single day's problem with a gassy stomach. If you have too much salsa, drink too much, or have had six cups of coffee, take a Tums, Rolaids, Alka Seltzer, or the chewable Pepsid AC. They handle spot problems, not long term ones.AND ANOTHER THING: I'm not a doctor. If you have persistent problems, see one. I'm just telling you what worked for me.As for me, though, I have found I don't have to worry, as long as I consistently follow these simple instructions: one 20 mg. famotidine, twice a day.
