Might as well get everything done in one shot. It turned out that the thermostat was OK. I pulled the old one out, tested it to make sure it worked, and then put it back in. It was behind the freezer rear wall. So now I have a spare new one for the future. I replaced the defrost timer which is inside the refrigerator. Fortunately the multi-wire connector fit the timer. I was worried because the socket on the timer looked different. But I just had to flip the connector 180 degrees and it fit perfectly. Since I replaced the defrost timer, I've had no water on the floor any more. Either the old timer cycle was erratic or occasionally getting stuck. It's been over two months now and the fridge is working fine. This refrigerator/freezer is 34 years old and it still works well. The plastic inside is starting to deteriorate. I had to paint the outside metal because of rust spots (Humid weather here in TX causing condensation). I replaced the water/Ice solenoid valve twice. But aside from that, no major issues. I don't think they make appliances like this any more. My wife's 2010 Samsung refrigerator in the kitchen is all digital.
