Review: Bye Bye Ring Doorbell - After receiving an email from Ring Doorbell to tell me my basic single subscription was going up to a whopping £50 a year (from £34) I found myself in the market place for a replacement that wasnt going to need an expensive subscription or even better...a subscription free model. So after a bit of research I purchased this Eufy doorbell instead. No subscription needed whatsoever to use it, as it writes the video content to a local SD card built into the base unit. A 16gb card is included which is enough for around 3 months recordings, but you can buy a bigger card cheaply if you require more. You can add a cheap subscription to it, to store your videos in the cloud if you prefer, but it isnt a requirement unlike the ring doorbell. Pros: No subscription required - main reason for getting this. Local storage Picture quality is great, and probably a little better than the ring gen2 box it replaced. Night vision is better than the ring too, as it has further reach. Easy enough to setup but make sure you register the base station/chime FIRST, otherwise the app gets stuck in a loop. (It took me a while to figure this out after trying to register the doorbell in the app first) and going round in circles!! Nice quality and as a premium device, you would expect this. Better longer lasting battery than Ring. Cons: mobile phone App is not a slick as the ring app.. but its not far off tbh. It does all the same things as ring does but not quite as intuative. A bit slower compared to ring to show notifications on your phone. This is a bit annoying and hopefully this will get better with newer apps and firmware etc. It takes a couple more seconds than ring to notify you of movement etc. The ring volume on the base station isnt as loud as the ring chime.. but at least it came free in the box compared to me shelling out another £30 to get the ring chime as an add on when i got that! Early days yet, but as a Ring alternative you cannot really go wrong and with it being subsciption free, it will have paid for itself within a couple of years.

**Q: Whats the difference between the doorbell with the chime unit and the doorbell with the homebase ?**
A: If you just want a working bell then they both give similar functionality. Practical issues include 
Chime 
- plugs into a plug socket
-removable microsd card (16G)

Homebase
- stand alone unit  
- Fixed flash memory (16G)
- expandable to link with other Eufy accessories
- Ethernet port

I have two bells and one of each. I have had some trouble with WiFi detection on the chime but never with the Homebase but I have not swapped them around to fully tested this.

**Q: is the chime provided by the unit that has to be attached to a router? And is there a distance limitation from the unit to camera?**
A: The chime needs to connect to the wifi. And it cannot be attached to the router with the ethernet cable. Usually, the chime can be 20-30ft from the doorbell. The actual range will vary depending on a number of factors such as the thickness of walls, obstacles inside the house, and the location of the router.

**Q: Is there any benefit in buying this wireless 2k video doorbell with the home base versus buying it with the chime? Not sure if I need a Homebase?**
A: Don't think you need the home base unless there are a bunch of other eufy products like cameras etc you want to add. If it's just a doorbell the chime is perfect

**Q: does this work with google**
A: Yes, the doorbell works with Google Assistant. But it only supports viewing the live stream.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Might not work properly at first.

We got two of these. One for us and one for mum and dad. I’d seen very good reviews and was attracted by the fact there’s no monthly fees attached compared to Ring. Got the 2k door bell and chime combo. Appearance wise the doorbell looks great and good quality. Everything was easy to set up. I registered the chime first, as recommended by other buyers and then the door bell. All good. Then we found that on both sets of devices that everything worked perfectly except for the live view. When you tried to go into it, it just said camera couldn’t connect and it was a p2p error. I did some research and found that lots of people had this problem. I reported it through the app and was given some things to try. All done but didn’t solve the problem. I then noticed the door bell needed a software update but every time I tried to do it, it didn’t work. I then found that some people had managed to force an update by keeping the door bell active. So as a last resort before contacting Eufy direct, I started the update whilst walking around with door bell and bingo…the software update downloaded within a couple of minutes. Went round to my mums and did exactly the same thing and it worked first time. Now both doorbells are working perfectly and doing a great job. So apart from that little glitch I’m still glad I bought them. I found that some people had rung Eufy direct who had then helped with the software update. Other peoples just worked first time and in other cases Eufy sent a replacement. Yes it’s a bit annoying and they are not cheap but we got there in the end. Easy to fit outside with good guidance. The app isn’t entirely intuitive but once you learn where everything is then it’s a breeze. Then you just sit back and become entirely addicted to looking at the recordings of the post man, the gardener, the cat that walks by every morning at 2am…etc. I deducted 1 star for the bit off faff with the software update otherwise I’d have given it 5.
