They are extra long and the brushes have good bounce to them. I am not using them for Chinese writing but as watercolor brushes. They came with a mat that rolls uo & ties to secure the brushes nicely and prevents the bristles from becoming mis-shapened during transport when traveling with them. They hold a lot of water and paint and are useful for painting different types of flower petals and leaves. I have seen no evidence of the bristles falling out or shedding.
