## Description

Compatible with: Mac; PC.

Review: worthwhile PC Upgrade - We have a Windows XP PC with 250GB hard drive that was getting full with photos and videos. We therefore ordered this inexpensive upgrade to triple the capacity to 750GB total. We ordered the same Western Digital Caviar Blue hard drive as the original since our old drive has been quite reliable over the past 4 years. [Western Digital also makes Green drives that are cooler and quieter, but supposedly not so reliable; and Black drives for gaming performance that we didn't need.] The new 500GB hard drive, as stated, is "bare". That means 2 cables are needed along with it - a data cable, and a power cable. We found this out by contacting Western Digital Tech Support who were quite helpful. We ordered these cables from desertcart.com as well: B0001Y8UI4, and B00009YFTI. The ambition was to do this at home; but realized upon opening the PC box that it wasn't so easy - the connections were not easy to figure out including jumper to lower the speed of the new drive from 6Gb/s to 3Gb/s - that Western Digital had warned us about to be compatible with the older PC. Fortunately, a local computer repair shop agreed to do it for only $50 [the same components purchased from them would have been twice as much as desertcart.com!] as opposed to Best Buy Geek Squad that wanted over $200 for the same labor. Now, the programs are on the old hard drive [C:] and the data is on this new drive [E:]. The hardware is not a problem; it is working fine as it should. The problem is with software handling the transition of the data. The document folders were an easy fix - change designation from C: to E: for each user. But some programs have been a pain: For example, iTunes had to be directed to E: drive and in the process of rebuilding its library, duplicated all files and also lost the playlists. It is now a headache to manually fix 200GB of iTunes library data since, as we all have experienced, there is no support when it comes to software [Help forums haven't responded]. But I believe we are good to go for another few years after this.
Review: mixed feelings - Disk was as advertised, but disappointed to find it was 10 years old.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can i use this Sata III HDD in a Sata II Motherboard?**
A: SATA III (revision 3.x) interface, formally known as SATA 6Gb/s, is a third generation SATA interface running at 6.0Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 600MB/s. This interface is backwards compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s interface, also known as SATA II. In other words, your motherboard will address the drive, but you won't benefit from the increased speed capability of this strong WD hard drive. One solution is to buy a Rosewill RC-227 PCI-Express 2.0 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card. Of course, your motherboard must have a PCI-e x1 slot available. A $19 solution..

**Q: replacing the old hard drive for my dell dimension 8300 series ( 8 years old PC). Will the WD Cavier Blue 500 GB work for my PC?**
A: Locate the Dell ID number on your PC and call Dell support. They will be able to examine your PC over the Internet and recommend a drive for you. E.g., does your PC have an IDE interface or is it even SATA capable? Then they will tell you about Henry's concerns in the previous answer. Partitioning is not the easiest system for novices. In addition, Dell can run a utility for you (or show you how) to identify all BIOS upgrades available for you - video, etc. that way, you spend you money one time, and get precisely the drive you need. That said, buy a new PC. When the drive's inserted, you'll still have a moderately functional 8-yr old computer.

**Q: does this come with the windows 7 license, since it has windows 7 os**
A: No, It is compatible with Windows 7. It is only a hard drive, it should work with any OS.

**Q: I have one caviar blue made in 2012 that has 6 year run time and never had one problem. Does everyone have similar success with theirs?**
A: The answer, yes. I have run spinner type hard drives for over ten years, until they become so outdated that I replace them will higher capacity hard drives. When I get the jitters about hard drive longevity, I simply but another one as a back up. At the moment, I only run hard mounted hard drives for system requirements and backups. I use external hard drives for all common storage. Have a problem with the computer, the external hard drive with all your data, can simply be plugged into another computer. Have a good week.

Disk was as advertised, but disappointed to find it was 10 years old.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Speedy Drive, quick access and quite
*by A***C on 4 April 2012*

Had the drive working for One week now in a new build Computer. Performs well, Its Sata 3 so read and write times are good. Is faster than Sata 2 but not spectacularly faster In real world use I find, the data speed within the computer is also affected by what chipset you're motherboard has and what CPU you have. The drive is quite compared to some I've had in the past. Has the jumpers on the back which are used for limiting the speed from 6Gbps to 3Gbps and/or using the PUIS (power up in standby) mode, handy if you have a large raid array to save on power depending on motherboard compatibility and raid type. So overall a good hard drive, quite and for what you get a good price, would buy again for any more new builds in the near future. Any problems with the drive and I will update this review. PS, Two good tips when handling hard drives, always wear a anti-static wrist band if you have one, and once you've taken the hard drive out of the anti-static bag, don't put it back on top of it. The bag is only anti-static on the inside, not the outside.
