The most recent one was a beautiful one that I purchased at Target, black and white from Crock Pot. However after reading a number of articles online, I realized that I might have a problem on my hands with the lead. I researched the matter and discovered that the glaze often contains lead. Upon researching further, I discovered that the Cuisinart model was BPA free. It is not easy to find kitchenware that is BPA free. I was pleased to see that. The next question was, was it lead-free? I called Cuisinart and they adamantly indicated that the slow cooker was lead free. For someone who needed to use her crock pot daily, almost 24/7, I really need a healthy crock pot. What is the point of cooking healthy foods if the container that I cook them in, is hazardous to my health? I was hesitant about the bulk aspect of the unit because I have a small kitchen and was concerned that it would take a lot of space. However based on the desertcart reviews and on the fact that the slow cooker is both BPA and lead free, I decided to order it. I could not have made a better choice on the planet!!!! First of all, this is the FIRST slow cooker that I have owned that is cool to the touch. Second, my food does not boil on low, and I lose ZERO water content. I needed an excellent slow cooker to make bone broths which have tremendous medicinal qualities (see Weston A. Price Foundation). And I had read about some persons being so serious about bone broths, that they had a perpetual broth going. To do that, I did not want to come home to a fire because of a deficient slowcooker. With this Cuisinart, I can make a lot of bone broth, the broth keeps going for 3 days, and after 24 hours, I do not have to worry, it goes to warm and then shuts down. because it is cool to the touch, my counter is not heated as was the case with the cheap crock pot brand. As for the bulk size, the slow cooker looks very beautiful on my counter. I have so far made lots of chicken broth, delicious, beef broth and fish broth. I use the bones for beef (knuckles, cartilage and feet as well as bone marrow), for fish (the heads) and for chicken (feet, back, head). I have noticed great improvement in my health, digestive system, excellent sleep. Please read online about all of the benefits of bone broth which man has been doing for thousands of years. After researching the available digital models, I settled on this one. I am glad I did. The design is a bit bulkier than I am used to, but it has nice sturdy handles and is well balanced. The handles on the removable crockery are also big enough to grab with pot holders. The touch pad programmable timer is easy to set. The three cooking levels (high, low, and simmer) plus "keep warm" are a nice feature. The book tells you what the temperatures the settings maintain. I like that it will start on "high" no matter what you set it for until it comes up to temperature and then shift to your setting. (Heating quickly past the "Danger Zone") When your cooking time is up, it will shift to "keep warm". The only thing I wish it would allow is dual programming. (Say, 2 hours on high and then 4 hours on low) Other nice touches: it comes with a dual height rack for the pot and the cord retracts into the body for neat storage. The instruction book is well written and contains quite a few recipes (70 I think) and the 3 yr warranty is a plus. Nothing makes cleanup easier than Reynolds Slow Cooker Liners (other than having someone else do it). Overall I am very pleased with this slow cooker and would recommend it to a friend. We are a small family of three with limited cooking space but think the 4 qt. too small. Suggestions?** A: While I do not own this particular one, I do own a couple of slow cooker crock-pots. One is 4qt. and the other is a 6qt. Here's the deal - once you get used to using a slow cooker, you will want the biggest one you can get(or fit on your counter-top). I haven't used my 4qt cooker for years, because you can always use less ingredients in a larger pot - but you can't fit 6qts. of ingredients into a 4qt. pot. I buy a load(at least 20lbs or better) of frozen boneless chicken breasts whenever they are on sale, then stack 'em in the deep freezer. About once or twice a month I will pull 4 or 5 pounds out put them into my crock ad some water, maybe some seasonings - and let them cook on low heat over-night. In the morning I have cooked boneless chicken breasts that I run under cold water to remove the fat(it all mostly cooks out) and put them into a large bowl or bucket. I then use a set of large bbq grill forks to shred them up for use in tacos, BBQ silders, etc. the cooked meat freezes well and can be thawed quickly in a microwave for just about anything you can think of. I also use it for making spaghetti sauce(which always seems to taste better if you let it cook slowly for a day or so). I prep up all my ingredients on one day, and actually mix everything into the pot the next day - then it sits for at least 8 hours on low heat with a toothpick under the lid. I check it every couple of hours(adding water if needed), once it is done to taste, I let it cool off, and then freeze it for later meals. Done this way, even fancy spaghetti recipes only take an hour to make. Once you get used to making meals with one, you will find that slow-cookers can do just about any meal, if you try.Get a BIG slow-cooker - you will not regret it(unless you can't fit it onto your counter). **Q: most recipes say cook on low or high, how do you know what temp that is?** A: On Slow Cook the manual states High is 212* and low is 200*. In my experience even on high this model doesn’t reach 200*. If a recipe calls for slow cook on high, I use the roast functions set to 250* **Q: Is this crock pot lead free?** A: I have tried to call crockpot to ask this ? . I have one that is 50 yrs old. They sent me to a 3rd party that did not even make this plug in crockpot. I was told as I understood that yes I should get a new model but again they only made the stove top crocks. I suspect if someone has an older model they should get a new one because the rules changed about lead in things a while back. I even had to get rid of some old plates I was using. I do not think I will purchase a crock pot due to the customer service and difficulty communicating with them. when I finally got to talk to a supervisor she helped, I think , and as I understand it , I was told 100% no lead BUT was told fda and Calif prop 65 meets requirements for the stoneware. **Q: What size is best for a slow cooker? The Cuisinart comes in several sizes.** A: Ron, as many of the people responding to your question have done, I purchased the 6 Qt. as well. I often downsize my recipes to a serving for 2 or 3 and a great cook book for these recipes is America's Test Kitchen, "Cooking for Two, 2012". There are slow cooker recipes that work great in the larger slow cooker and come out just fine. I purchased this specific Cuisinart because of its oblong shape - makes it easy to cook meat or chicken on skewers. And, with the larger size you are prepared for the eventual times you want to cook a roast or larger meal. Over this past weekend I used the larger one to make some beef stew and, "because it was out already" made a big batch of chili. I read the reviews, here on Amazon, and I decided this one was for me. I have not been able to make a good pot of baked beans in my 50 some odd years of cooking. I don't know why, really, I followed the recipes to the letter, but I usually ended up with tough or too soggy beans. I purchased 'The Gourmet Slow Cooker' cookbook ny Lynn Alley, and one of her recipes was Boston Baked Beans. I rinsed and picked over the beans, added them to the slow cooker, added just enough water to cover, and cooked on high for two hours. They were tender, then I added the rest of the ingredients and cooked on low for 7 hours. I placed the cover slightly ajar to allow the beans to carmelize for the last half hour. These beans were so good that the angels sang. This one recipe alone, was enough to make me a convert to this slow cooker. The next day I tried lamb shanks with tomato sauce, a winner, the lamb fell off the bones, and the tomato sauce was so lucious after cooking for 6 hours. These recipes are just a representative of the delicious meals that can be made with a Cuisinart Slow Cooker. The slow cooker is very attractive. The inner Ceramic pot is four quarts, just enough to make a fabulous meal for a family with some leftovers. There is a cooking rack, you could make a souffle using the rack. A see thru glass cover is a plus. There are four settings, high, low, simmer and warm.
