The Starrett 12" Combination Square with Square Head includes a reversible lock bolt, scriber, spirit level (except 4"), and hardened steel, photo-engraved blade with regular or satin chrome finish. The combination square includes a cast iron head with a black wrinkle finish. 12" , 4R Grad, Satin Chrome Blade. The square head has a precision ground 90° square face and a 45° miter face. It is a highly versatile layout tool for scribing right angles and parallel lines, and a measuring tool that can be used as a tri-square, miter, depth gage, height gage, and level. They work, but have a fair amount of slop to them and can be frustrating to set to very fine marks. Now that I finally made the jump to the Starrett I have asked myself why I waited so long. Yes, it's not cheap, but the quality and precision are remarkable. It's very easy to make fine adjustments, there is no slop and the satin finish make it easy to see the measurement marks. I use my combination squares for machine setups and marking joinery on pieces I build. I invested in the 24" blade to go along with this as I often need to make marks between 12-24". It swaps out easily with the 12" blade. A great tool for measuring and marking in the shop.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this combination square as accurate as a less expensive fixed square? I get that it is versatile, but is a riveted square more accurate?**
A: I have 5 of these type adjustalle squares...4 of them I have accumulated over many years. None of the old ones are perfect in every way....either they aren't absolutely perfectly square or the bubble level is off. I got tired of that crap quality so finally bit the bullet and got the Starrett knowing if it wasn't flawless I could return it. It is absolutely flawless. The more demanding test is to take a marking knife and scribe a line on a panel, flip the square over and insert the tip of the marking knife in the previous line. Now scribe a line on top and compare. The Starrett was perfect at 90 degrees and 45 degrees. And the bubble level agreed with my very expensive machinists digital level. Only con....it is expensive but worth it if you value accuracy.

**Q: Does it come with a starrett box?**
A: It comes in a box with the starrett logo on it...if you're asking if it comes with a protective case then no.

**Q: Any issues with rust on this square?  I live in FL, so the humidity really takes a toll on my tools.**
A: I live on the coast of northern CA. The humidity is probably not quite as brutal as FL, but in the few months I’ve had this square, I see no rust haze. Though I’ve yet to use it, camilla oil is good insurance.

A: I googled it and it's made in Massachusetts.

They work, but have a fair amount of slop to them and can be frustrating to set to very fine marks. Now that I finally made the jump to the Starrett I have asked myself why I waited so long. Yes, it's not cheap, but the quality and precision are remarkable. It's very easy to make fine adjustments, there is no slop and the satin finish make it easy to see the measurement marks. I use my combination squares for machine setups and marking joinery on pieces I build. I invested in the 24" blade to go along with this as I often need to make marks between 12-24". It swaps out easily with the 12" blade. A great tool for measuring and marking in the shop.

This square is well built and easy to read. I have and older Stanley Combination square, same design, as well as a wooden and brass fixed square. In comparison to the Stanley, squareness is equal, but ease of reading the measurements goes to the Starrett. Also the twist tightener on the Starrett is more stabler and easier to use if that makes sense. I feel the improved engineering of the Starrett does offset the increased price ($20 bucks or so for the Stanley, in comparison to over $100 for the Starrett). Fair deal but again, I compared to a older 1980's Stanley. The fixed wooden and Brass Square, also pre 1980's can only be used for squareness, measurements are really tough to read. I would recommend this square for those wishing to upgrade or make an initial high end buy.
