Clean the outside with just a damp cloth and maybe a little window cleaner. The best way to clean inside is to try and not let it get dirty in the first place. Don't use regular tap water use distilled water to inhibit algae growth. Also an algae inhibitor additive (found at aquarium stores) can be added to the water. But if you must do a thorough interior cleaning i would a use warm soapy water solution (fill the tube with warm water with just a little dishwashing liquid added & maybe a capfull of bleach or windex) and just let it sit for a few minutes. Swish it around by inverting the tube, empty, then repeat with distilled water to rinse. I'd avoid large quantities of harsh cleaning chemicals just to protect the LED light system at the bottom of the base.
