## Overview

Natural Waterscapes Granular Sodium Bentonite Clay is a premium 45 lbs bag of natural expanding clay that swells up to 15 times its volume when wet, providing an effective, eco-friendly seal for ponds and water features. Designed for customizable application rates based on soil type, it ensures a durable, water-tight barrier while enhancing soil integrity.

## Description

Bentonite clay is a natural expanding clay sealant that when exposed to moisture can expand 15X or more creating a very effective pond sealant when applied correctly. Bentonite Clay Application Rates for pond/lake bottoms To properly apply bentonite to seal a pond, the pond must be drained and the bentonite clay then incorporated into the soil of the pond bottom and sides. The application rate for bentonite ranges from 2 pounds to more than 5 pounds per square foot depending on the soil characteristics. For clayey and silty soils, 2 pounds per square foot MAY be sufficient. For sandy soils 4 pounds MAY be sufficient and for soil containing gravel and rock, in excess of 5 pounds will be required to obtain a seal. Once the bentonite is applied, the soil should be disk harrowed to mix the soil and bentonite and then compacted. Alternatively, a continuous blanket of bentonite can be applied to the soil and then carefully covered with clean soil or sand to prevent the clay from mobilizing into the water column.

Review: Worked like a charm - So, the Natural Waterscapes Granular Sodium Bentonite Clay for Pond Sealing has fixed my leaking pond! The leak was around the concrete drain. The leak was so bad there was a large cavity about four feet deep and 30 feet long running along the outside of the drainpipe. I dug out the area around the drain about a two foot cube, that was the beginning of the big cavity. I mixed the bentonite clay in with the dirt I had dug up and tamped in around the concrete drain. I then filled in the rest of the cavity with dirt from the farm. The pond filled up after several rains and has been at its normal level for two weeks. There is no discernible drop in the water level. For reference my pond is roughly 150 feet in diameter and 10 feet deep at the deepest point. I would recommend making sure you order enough as the one bucket barely did my project. I would say I removed 5-6 large wheelbarrows full of dirt from the leaking area and then mixed the clay in. If I had to remove anymore dirt I don't think one bucket of bentonite clay would have been enough.
Review: Pleasantly surprised, one bag seemed to be enough - I evenly sprinkled one, 50 pound bag in a damaged live stock pond that had very deep cracks in the clay. I wasnt expecting it to work as well as it did. We had a hard rain the following day and as you can see it is holding water again. I didnt mix it tap ot or anything. Just sprinkled it evenly and more heavily in the cracks. Due to cost restrictions, I will be using a pure lumping clay kitty litter instead as it is the same thing and much cheaper, to seal the remaining areas that need to be sealed. This stuff DOES work, but its pricey. Our pond was completly dried out and really sad looking. Its about a 10 x 25 ft pond. If you can afford this stuff, definitely get it.

**Q: would this work to make a stock pond?**
A: Bentonite is used to seal soil for leaking/ or new ponds. Depending on soil type we recommend anywhere from 2-8lbs of bentonite per square foot of pond area. (2-3lbs for good/poor clay, 4-8lbs for sandy soil types). Natural Waterscapes

**Q: I want to make a duck pond. I have a low area on my property that holds water when it rains. Could i rotatill this in with dirt and will it stay there**
A: Tilling the bentonite with soil and then compacting it with a pad foot roller is the recommended method for pond bottom sealing. Depending on the soil type, it will require 2 to 6 pounds per square foot of pond bottom. You may want to look for it in 2,000 lb bulk sacks unless it will be a relatively small pond.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Repaired pond leak
*by M***S on April 5, 2020*

I was happy that it fixed the leak in our pond and happy that it came in a bucket instead of a bag as it is much easier to store. last time I used it, it worked for a few years until I noticed the same location this spring. We have a lot of springs on our property and one turned out to be right next to the pond. You can try having it professionally repaired but this is relatively easy and just takes a little patience.
