There's a little bit of fraying but it seems superficial. New out of the box, they're coated in something dark and mildly sticky. I remember it wasn't so bad that I had to go back inside to wash my hands, but was noticeable enough that I was wiping my hand on my pants. The laces lock together tightly and I've never worried about them coming undone. They've definitely outlasted the laces that come with the boot, as those tend to snap right at the last set of eyelets.
