I have used it for a while now and it has performed exactly as I expected with no issues. Review: Here's What desertcart Don't Tell You - Formatted For Use With Mac OS Only - Had seen an advert for the G Drive on Instagram & pondered on whether to get one or just continue to use OneDrove which I don't really know much about. Decided not to purchase at that time & then an Iomega external HD that I had recently decided that it didn't want to work anymore, so I relented & purchased the G Drive. I was very impressed by its size as it was smaller than an iPhone! I connected the USB & connected it to my Windows laptop & expected to see a message saying that it was installing, but did not see any such message. I spent literally 3.5hrs plugging in, unplugging the drive, restarting my laptop thinking that was the issue even though it was delivered the same day as the drive (Easter Sunday). Still didn't work so initiated an online chat with desertcart Product Supportnto save me bouncing the drive off the wall! desertcart tell me they cannot help me! I have to call San Disk! So I called San Disk this morning & spoke to a lovely Agent called Ramsey, who informed me that these Drives are factory formatted to only work with devices with Mac OS & that is why my laptop did not recognise the drive being connected. He then emailed me some instructions on how to format the drivento work with Windows. I got slightly confused and asked if he could call me back to walk me through the steps to format it which he did. He remotely accessed my laptop & gave me step by step instructions to format the drive & they worked, ao no need for me to return to desertcart for a redund So thanks for nothing desertcart Product Support! Just remember folks if you're purchasing this for a device with Windows OS, you will need to format the drive before it can be used, there are no instructions with the drive to forewarn or show you how to do it. You will have to contact San Disk or buy an alternative device. ## Features - USB-C (5Gbps) drive for quick file backup and storage - USB 3.0 and USB Type-C compatible - Premium, anodised aluminium enclosure for strength you can feel - Built tough with an easy-grip bumper for pro-grade durabilty you can trust - Triple-layer shock resistance for added protection,Rain-and dust-resistant (IP54) enclosure with a 1000lb crush resistance ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B094JHRBJW | | Best Sellers Rank | 55,168 in Computers & Accessories ( See Top 100 in Computers & Accessories ) 205 in External Hard Drives | | Box Contents | G-DRIVE™ ArmorATD™, Quick Start Guide, USB-C to USB-A Cable, USB-C™ Cable | | Brand | SanDisk Professional | | Brand Name | SanDisk Professional | | Cache Memory Installed Size | 5 | | Color | Black | | Compatible Devices | Laptop, Desktop, Other Mac Devices with USB Port | | Connectivity technology | USB | | Customer Package Type | FFP | | Customer Reviews | 4.3 out of 5 stars 2,254 Reviews | | Data Transfer Rate | 135 Megabits Per Second | | Digital Storage Capacity | 5000 GB | | Digital storage capacity | 5000 GB | | Enclosure Material | Aluminium | | Form Factor | 2.5-inch | | Global Trade Identification Number | 00718037891859 | | Hard Disk Description | Mechanical Hard Disk | | Hard Disk Form Factor | 2.5 Inches | | Hard Disk Interface | USB-C | | Hard disk form factor | 2.5 Inches | | Hard disk interface | USB-C | | Hard-Drive Size | 5 TB | | Hardware Connectivity | USB | | Installation Type | External Hard Drive | | Item Dimensions L x W x Thickness | 13.2L x 8.8W x 3Th centimetres | | Item Type Name | SanDisk Professional G-Drive ArmorATD 5TB external hard drive 6.35 cm (2.5 inches) USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 3. | | Item Weight | 0.77 Pounds | | Manufacturer | SanDisk | | Media Speed | 16,875 megabytes_per_second | | Model Name | G-DRIVE | | Model Number | SDPH81G-005T-GBAND | | Network Connectivity Technology | USB | | Number of Items | 1 | | Product Features | Dust Resistant, Portable, Shock Resistant, Water Resistant | | Product Warranty | 3 year manufacturer | | Read Speed | 16.88 Megabytes Per Second | | Special feature | Dust Resistant, Portable, Shock Resistant, Water Resistant | | Specific Uses For Product | Gaming, Multimedia | | UPC | 718037891859 | | Unit Count | 1.0 Count | ## Product Details - **Digital storage capacity:** 5000 GB - **Hard disk interface:** USB-C - **Connectivity technology:** USB - **Brand:** SanDisk Professional - **Special feature:** Dust Resistant, Portable, Shock Resistant, Water Resistant - **Hard disk form factor:** 2.5 Inches - **Hard disk description:** Mechanical Hard Disk - **Compatible devices:** Laptop, Desktop, Other Mac Devices with USB Port - **Installation type:** External Hard Drive - **Colour:** Black ## Images ![SanDisk Professional 5TB G-DRIVE ArmorATD, Dust, Drop, Shock and Water resistant, portable rugged external HDD for MAC, Up to 135MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 1, Thunderbolt 3 - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81c7bXDuOAL.jpg) ![SanDisk Professional 5TB G-DRIVE ArmorATD, Dust, Drop, Shock and Water resistant, portable rugged external HDD for MAC, Up to 135MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 1, Thunderbolt 3 - Image 2](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81-Jq7U-wbL.jpg) ![SanDisk Professional 5TB G-DRIVE ArmorATD, Dust, Drop, Shock and Water resistant, portable rugged external HDD for MAC, Up to 135MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 1, Thunderbolt 3 - Image 3](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71JsbkfFV5L.jpg) ![SanDisk Professional 5TB G-DRIVE ArmorATD, Dust, Drop, Shock and Water resistant, portable rugged external HDD for MAC, Up to 135MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 1, Thunderbolt 3 - Image 4](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71iJmf5jp0L.jpg) ![SanDisk Professional 5TB G-DRIVE ArmorATD, Dust, Drop, Shock and Water resistant, portable rugged external HDD for MAC, Up to 135MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 1, Thunderbolt 3 - Image 5](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81tPph0tV6L.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Size** options. ## Questions & Answers **Q: This is usb 3.1 gen 1 according to the website. why does it say usb 3.2 gen 1 here?** A: USB 3.2 gen 1x1 (often shortened to 3.2 gen 1) is exactly the same as USB 3.1 gen 1, which is exactly the same as USB 3.0. And I do mean EXACTLY the same technical specs, just relabeled; this is a 5 Gb/s interface. To get a 10 Gb/s interface you need to use USB 3.2 gen 2x1 (often shortened to 3.2 gen 2), which exactly the same as USB 3.1 gen 2. To get a 20 Gb/s interface you need to use USB 3.2 gen 2x2, which has no USB 3.1 equivalent. (You'd think the USB folks would have a marketing dept that would tell them what a mess they were making!) **Q: can I download from a Sandisk disk to the hardrive?** A: If I understand the question, can you move files from the SanDisk to another drive? yes, you can It is very easy to do so and you can move files from another HD to the SanDisk. Hope that helps. **Q: Does thiis drive come formatted for Mac or Windws ?** A: It is not formatted for win 10, and it is not recognized on my win 10 laptop! My iPad Pro does not have the capability to reformat this drive. You need to be an IT tech to figure out how to get win 10 to see the drive, let alone format it. I am not pleased! **Q: What is distinction between mechanical hard disk for this product and portable for other external drives?** A: There are mechanical or “spinning” disks, referred to as internal or portable drives. An internal hard drive is generally more delicate in the sense that the reader mechanism floats above the spinning disk, which is sufficient for non-portable (i.e. internal hard drives). This is why a sharp hit to a computer or laptop while the non solid state drive (non-SSD) is active will most likely cause the disk and the drive head (reader mechanism) to collide or crash, thus destroying your hard drive. On the other hand, a portable hard drive built with portability in mind and are less susceptible to bumps or knocks but could still cause a disk “crash” if it is dropped while the read mechanism is writing or reading to/from the portable disk drive. However, these portable drives would/should be less susceptible to a bump or somewhat less careful treatment than an internal hard drive while it’s running.
From the durability standpoint against bumps and knocks, an SSD should be more rugged and reliable than even the portable drive.
You quite naturally pay extra for the SSD as its data exchange rate is generally much faster and you pay significantly more for a larger capacity SSD storage device than internal or portable hard drives. You are unlikely to be able purchase a 1TB SSD let alone a 5TB SSD for the same cost as the 5TB portable drive my comments relate here. Someday, someone will make a better, more durable, faster, and contain more storage space in a “next-gen drive” that will cost similar to the portable 5TB drive you are have questions expressed in this forum. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reliable and rugged *by M***K on 18 January 2025* Good quality feel to this product.
