Trying to gauge how much I need for weekend fires** A: I use sparingly usually a stack of 5-6 pieces in my chiminea. They maintain a good burn rate. One other hint in starting a fire is that you lay two parallel blocks with fatwood in between and place two smaller blocks across the two bottom blocks leaving air gap between. Take a match and light one end of a fatwood stick and light the pile between the blocks. Once the fatwood starts to burn place your stick between the blocks to light the other side. The wood is processed from pine stumps left as logging waste. The initial black smoke when burning is from the natural occurring resin in the wood. There are no chemicals added to this product The California Prop 65 warning is regarding the carbon monoxide produced when burning fatwood or any type of wood. Before trying Fat Wood we used to use just about everything you could think of to start the fire. Some items worked ok but most would burn out before the wood would catch on fire. I'd have to try 2 or 3 times before the firewood would finally catch fire. My wife could almost never get a fire going so I was delegated to be the one and only designated fire starter. I used to have a good source for seasoned cedar to split into kindling wood and that was my favorite go to for starting the stove. But my source dried up and I haven't had any cedar in a couple of years. I had seen Fat Wood kindling in Wal-Mart a few times but for some reason (stupidity?!) I never bought any. It just seemed too expensive for the amount of kindling wood in the package.Well, I finally picked up some of the Fat Wood and gave it a try. I was amazed at how easily it ignited and how consistently it would start a fire in the wood stove. The stuff ignites so easily that my wife now starts the fires most of the time. I don't think I will ever use any other fire starter products in our stove.And as far as the concerns about costs, I've found that I'm actually saving money with the Fat Wood because I'm using much less of it than the other starters I was using.
