The black seal around the edge is very tight. They don't leak at that point and they are splash proof. Remember the operative word splash proof and not spill proof. You can't turn them upside down because they will leak from the drink opening, but the lid wasn't designed to be spill proof but splash proof. The opening cover slides in place smoothly and stays in place. Unlike the actual RTIC lid you do not hear it click open or shut, but none-the-less they still work as intended and stay in place. I highly recommend the lid, and I myself are going to buy two more.
