Review: Awesome Stuff, Even for Idiots Like Me! - I am not a DIY-er. Growing up my mom was a costumer/seamstress and I watched her make hella messes everywhere dying fabric and clothing for the stage, and mom always came out with odd colored hands. I swore I'd never do it, the results might have looked great on stage, but the effort hardly seemed worth it for every day life (which, by the way, did not stop my mom from dying anything she could get her hand on if the mood struck her..!). Because I could never stand the mess it made, I never became a DIY-er - I'm a DIY idiot. Recently I bought a pair of pants that were so nicely cut, I really wished I had a pair in black. I decided to go for it - times have changed, and I'm not running a theater costume shop, there's no need for stress or mess. And I was right. I followed the directions explicitly. Pants were 100% cotton, brand new, so I washed them, but did not dry them. The directions say there's enough dye/dye-power to effectively dye about 1/2 pound of fabric, roughly equivalent to a large shirt or pair of pants. Perfect. I decided I'd push it a little and drop in a light henley that was also 100% cotton and would likely take very well. The pants were olive kaki, and the shirt a kind of muted pewter blue, both dark enough to provide a nice undertone to the velvet black Dylon color. I dyed both items together in a bucket, and was fairly lazy about stirring, but I was sure to saturate both items of clothing. I let them sit in the dye with a couple of extra stirs for an extra half hour, not that I think that did anything, but whatevs, couldn't hurt. Rinsed in cold water, as per instructions, then washed in the washing machine to get the excess dye out. I didn't use detergent, and will wash these clothes with other black clothing, as I'm sure there's plenty of excess dye in them. But the results are fantastic! The pants look incredible, you'd never know I didn't buy them off the shelf in the color they came out. A tip for those who want to do a top notch job - thread, nylon or metal zippers, buttons and decals, none of these things will take dye, which worked out well in my case. The shirt didn't come out black for some reason, but a rich navy blue. I don't think that had anything to do with the dye (for instance, if I used too much fabric for the amount of dye the pants wouldn't have come out as beautifully dark as they did), I think the shirt must have some part polyester or something. In both cases, I won - the shirt looks fantastic, better than when I bought it three years ago and the pants are incredible! I don't want to make a regular habit dying clothes, but I won't be reluctant either. This was a great, no muss no fuss experience with a top-notch result - my clothes don't look home-dyed at all, they look store crisp! One thing I'll suggest to the dying novice: spend an extra couple of $ to get long rubber gloves for the dying/stirring process. I used cheap little ones that went up to my wrists, and while I managed to keep my forearms dye-free, the right hand glove had a tiny puncture and I ended up with an entirely black middle finger on my right hand...ha! Thankfully the dye does wear off skin pretty quickly, so it only lasted a few days..! Whew!
Review: Fantastic dye - This dye is great, it dyed a pair of grey jeans easily and from what I can tell, evenly. I also dyed a linen shirt, it has taken the color well. Previously to using this brand I used Rit and this is a huge improvement!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What are the instructions on the packet for this dye?**
A: I know this about 8 months late, but I'm answering it anyway for anybody else who might want to know.DIRECTIONS FOR TOP LOADING MACHINES:1. Prewash fabric and leave damp.2. Set machine to longest wash cycle, hot water & lowest water level to cover fabric. Start cycle.3. When machine is full, use rubber gloves and add dye and 4 cups of salt. Close lid and allow to agitate for 1 min. Add fabric and allow wash cycle to finish. Before dye solution has drained, restart machine to beginning of cycle to ensure fabric is in dye for at least 30 minutes. Allow cycle to finish.4. Leave fabric in machine and add detergent. Run full wash cycle to remove excess dye. Additional rinse cycles may be necessary. 5. Line dry fabric away from sunlight and direct heat.6. To clean machine -- add 1 cup of bleach and detergent and run longest hot water cycle with machine empty. Wipe machine surfaces with a bleach solution.COLOR SHADE:The shade you achieve depends on water/dye ratio, fabric amount, type, and color. 1 lb of fabric per 1 package (100 gram package) should achieve full color.Lighter shades will result on fabrics with polyester blends.Color mixing rules apply. Blue dye on yellow fabric gives green results. Will not dye: wool, silk, 100% polyester and synthetic fabrics*Not recommended for front loading washing machines

**Q: I have a pair of navy khakis I want to dye black, can I do that without a washer?**
A: Each dye works for about 1lb of clothing. Dying something black can make things around dye too. I used a bucket in the garage to dye some trousers I had and they came out very well. Wear rubber gloves or you will have black hands. These dyes are very good and will work well. Also, make sure the article is wet before you put it into the dye bath. If you are uncertain about the weight of clothing try using two packets of the dye as that will guarantee the blackest black you can get. Also, wash separately for quite a few washes as excess dye will leach out for a little while. Each time I have washed a dyed article I rinsed it with salt in the water. The salt will seal the dye better.

**Q: Has anybody tried this dye in a front loading washing machine?**
A: Most commercially-available fabric dyes need 1) immersion in 2) hot water with 3) a mordant such as salt and 4) time for the dye to bond with the fibers. A front loader uses far less water than a top-loader; it doesn't fill a tub with water like a top loader does, and just doesn't give the fabric enough time soaking evenly in a volume of water with heat to set the dye.

**Q: How well would this work on 100% Egyptian cotton? Going from white to black?**
A: Hi Maureen, in general all cotton dyes well. White fabric to Black dye produces a good outcome. I add distilled White vinegar and Epsom salts in HOT water with the dye. Let the garment soak 2 or 3 times longer than the directions call for. Use more dye to insure a deep Black color. I hope that helps!

### ⭐ Time and Money Down the Drain
*by J***L on January 31, 2012*

I ordered this item a few months ago from the seller "Stuff 4 Scrapbooking." Not only did the dye not work, but the seller was completely useless. First of all it was shipped in a HUGE box. Too big to fit in my mailbox and was sent back to the post office. I have no idea why such a small item was in a gigantic box but it added hassle that I did not want to deal with.. If I wanted to drive around for fabric dye I would have gone to the store and picked it up myself. I have tried dies in the past and they have not worked - considering this one had good reviews I tried it and failed just like the rest. I even let my ONE item sit over night, it couldn't even dye one single item. The seller contacted me to see if I was satisfied and I was not, I never heard from them again. Do not waste your time or money.
