## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can anyone confirm this radio can work 6meters? I just purchased this unit, programmed with chirp and th9800d software and the radio only does 45-50**
A: The radio works on 6 meters and 10 meters, FM only, and as mentioned in another answer, only the left side of the radio can be used for those bands.

**Q: What is the difference between the tyt th-9800 and the tyt th-9800d qnd the plus version? or are they all the same radio?**
A: The frequencies are different. The -D model operates on frequencies that are not part of the ham bands. I’m not your mom or the police, but understand that the FCC does not permit operation of radios in the US that do this. The radio appears to operate on 11 meters (I haven’t checked exactly). The FCC has proposed allowing FM transmission on 11 meters. I don’t know if they have approved it yet, but most CB radios don’t operate on FM.

Realistically, nobody is going to track you down if you use this radio on CB. But you’ll be mostly alone on FM and you are running an illegal radio with illegal power output if you do.

The plus version runs straight ham frequencies.
I wouldn’t risk my ham license by buying the -D radio. Your choice.

One more thing. By the time you learn how to set either radio up to use repeaters, etc. so you can actually talk to someone on the ham bands, you’re almost ready to get a license. Just please get one. It’s not a big deal. I really don’t want to argue over whether someone will talk to you in an emergency (they won’t…), but why not take the test?

**Q: Can it be programmed for gmrs on chirp**
A: correct answer: it is not compliant with the FCC for gmrs
the answer you want: yes! you can press CTRL + F11, password 9800TYT, and you can edit frequency ranges. Pretty good radio for the price. The first one i had was a dud after 2 months, but customer service was excellent. 1 year warranty and new one was shipped and arrived in 2 days

**Q: Tx in usb...? or only fm**
A: This radio is strictly an FM radio, at least as far as transmitting. It will transmit on the 6 meter, 10 meter, 2 meter, and 70 cm bands, but again, only in FM.
It may receive AM on the aircraft bands, but I can't confirm this as both of the CMX138 audio chips in my radio have failed.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very capable radio at a great price
*by on Reviewed in the United States August 13, 2023*

I currently, or used to, own several Yaesu, Icom, Alinco, Radioddity, and Baofeng radios. I think this is my second TYT. The TYT TH-9800D is performing very well but I've only had it for a few hours. It's not a cheap looking build and feels solid, so I expect it to last a while. (Knock on wood). The Chirp programming went well, though I always need to remember how to get to the finer details in Basic setup (which is usually staring me in the face). This is kind of a clone of a Yaesu FT-8900 at a reasonable price. The speaker sound is good, it has clean signal output, the display is bright, and it's a nice looking radio (it doesn't have quite the same ruggedized look of the Yaesu). One oddity, though... the box arrived without any tape or seal, so it may have been opened before or could be an open box display unit from somewhere. Quite happy with the purchase.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Quad Band Radio
*by on Reviewed in the United States October 26, 2020*

I am not sure what or why some of the feature ratings really apply. How do you judge sheerness or thickness? Well, the radio is not all that thick, maybe less than 2 inches. Size wise it is good for a mobile radio as it has the detachable front. But I am using it as a base station with a TekPower 23 amp power supply and it seems to be doing great. I have not tried other bands than VHF, but I did get the TYT Quad band antenna to go with it and It can pick up distant repeaters and Hams from neighoring states. Is is the second radio. The first one seemed to have a problem resetting when the PTT was pushed for more than a few seconds and It also seemed to be hard to turn on and off. Their slight push on the power button was taking more than the one second in the manual. However, this one seems to be doing really well as I mentioned. I would recommend it as there are not that many Quad band radios available for this price range. You could get one of the Quad Band radios which are 25 watts for about half the price, but then you may only get about 20 - 25 miles range.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Decent for the Money
*by on Reviewed in the United States June 24, 2019*

Nice built quality and button and front key features. Arrives with FCC compliance for 2meter & 440 (70cm). These can be unlocked if you dare and the settings are only available with the Factory Software. Running Windows 10, software works fine. WARNING! There are 2 ways to unlock freqs like a Baofeng, but beware, if you use CHIRP, all settings will be missing if you do the MOD. I saved an image of the original Factory Software & options. Then imported radio and saved those settings first. Same with CHIRP, imported stock radio and saved dated image. Then tried the MOD and yup, no CHIRP settings. Resetting radio to factory WILL NOT REMOVE EXPANDED TXT FREQS. However, if you made backup first, just restore to the radio and it will put everything back where it should be, legal freqs and CHIRP settings available. Ran mine temp to 24amp power supply with cigarette plug wired on back as an experiment. Power settings on meter came in spot on except 1. Low 5watts, Mid2 10watts, Mid1 20watts exactly. High power @ 40watts which is decent for running thru 24amp supply wired to cig lighter adapter, then cig power supply to radio. Passed power test @ 100%. I have a friend who has one of these, always sounds excellent with stock mic. When you setup freqs, select MEDIUM on the narrow or wide band settings. This will give best sound with perfect clean output. Also like the 4 P buttons on Mic. You can program them in the Factory Software or Chirp. Great features that my Yaesu FT-8900R lack in options. Nice air flow from back heat sink and fan. Purchased 2nd one while available for basement. Running mine in bedroom with ladderline jpole dual band antenna on 5 watts hits repeaters in opposite direction loud and proud. Get the Asurion Protection Plan as this radio only has 3 mth warranty to CHINA!Update: Having problem figuring out the cross band repeater function. Seems to only work in VFO mode not with saved memory channels (simplex on left, repeater on right).
